New York State Common Core Learning Standards

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association (NGA), with participation of the overwhelming majority of states, set a goal to create standards that are “research and evidence-based, aligned with college and work expectations, include rigorous content and skills and are internationally benchmarked.”

The New York State Board of Regents adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics and for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, with the understanding that New York State may add additional expectations to the Common Core. New combined standards were introduced in the spring of 2011 and will be implemented in New York State schools and the Diocese of Rochester Catholic Schools beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.
